I have owned the McLaren 12C for about 9 years now, and it's been almost 7 years since I had the car wrapped in vinyl for a color-change to blue. I still love the car for its otherworldly handling and power, but I thought that a small visual update might get me excited about its looks again. So even though the car absolutely stands out in a sea of black-grey-silver cars, I decided I'm going to have the blue vinyl removed and go back to the original black paint.
In addition, I wanted to find a set of wheels in something like bronze or gold-toned that would update the look and also harken back to the days of cars like the LeMans-winning Ford GT40 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. The stock wheels are great, and they bear a resemblance to the wheels on the McLaren F1 supercar of 1990s, but I wanted the car to look a tad more updated.
The wheels are 20" x 11.5" in the rear and 19" x 9" in front. I ordered the recommended tires: 315/30/20 and 245/35/19 Michelin Pilot 4S. The tires were far heavier than the wheels! But mounted up, I could tell I was going to really like these.
Once I got them on the car, it confirmed that I want to go back to black paint. I love the wheels against the blue, but I think the black on bronze will be a very clean look. So, the car is scheduled to get unwrapped in a couple weeks! Meanwhile, I love the new "jewelry" on this car!
And here it goes, I drive off, with my wife following behind, to take the car to the great guys at "Vinyl Styles" in San Carlos to have the blue vinyl removed.
Back to the original black, looking stealthy! Now she's off to get a detail, polish, and ceramic coating!
